Stand for something,
Stand for something!
Otherwise what do you stand for,
why are you even standing?
Leave it to Dame Vivienne Westwood to make a catwalk political statement. From her epochal Seditionaries: Clothes for Heroes store, she hasn’t stopped creating wares for outspoken girls (and boys). For Spring/Summer she tackled the Scottish Referendum with her eponymous Red collection, while for Autumn/Winter her show urged Brits to “Vote Green”. An active protester — taking on everything from fracking to Wikileaks, climate change to gender inequality — she has penned pamphlets and manifestos such as Active Resistance to Propaganda and End Capitalism, and launched a campaign on Climate Revolution.
She has appeared in a shower cap and underwear for Peta in support of vegetarianism; delivered a gift of asbestos to David Cameron; mocked Margaret Thatcher for a controversial cover of Tatler, wearing a suit Thatcher had ordered and not yet collected; and worked to produce Ethical Fashion Africa, empowering female workers.
With a true punk attitude, the icon is teaching today’s youth to wake up, provoke and stand up to the older generations, encouraging us to take responsibility for our world. With no sign of slowing down, Westwood is an inspiration using the runway as a medium to push humanitarian and environmental issues close to her heart and at the same time defying ageism and sexism.
Dressed in her S/S 15 collection, here we present to you The Candidates, a new wave of faces who represent the future of girl power.
